Does your nationality need a residence permit?

Dutch residence permit and relocation support

EU, EEA & Swiss nationals

No MVV and no residence permit. You register at the town hall and you're set.

MVV-exempt nationals

You can travel to the Netherlands first, provide biometrics here and collect the permit. This skips the embassy appointment and saves two to four weeks.

Residence status support in the Netherlands

MVV-required nationals

You apply for the MVV at a Dutch embassy in your home country, collect the visa sticker, then travel and collect residence permit in the Netherlands at the IND office.

DAFT: the US-only route

The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty gives US nationals a self-employment route that nobody else gets, with a low investment threshold of €4,500. If you're American and going freelance or starting a business here, this is usually the path. UK citizens are exempt from the MVV entry visa, but since Brexit they're treated as non-EU for everything else.
